Playfulism: Unleash Your Inner Child

Last summer I started adding some pops of colour into my living room. It’s a very calm space of sage green and cream, layered with textures and curvy shapes, however I’ve been wanting to unleash some mediterraean blue on it. It had started to feel too grown up!

We have a fab piece of artwork by one of my clients, which is very Pollockesque, and although mainly green it has some cobalt blue, neon pink and yellow all playing joyfully in the background and I want more of this and it seems that it’s not just me.

In the realm of interior design, where trends often lean towards minimalism and understated elegance, there is a delightful movement known as playfulism emerging, although there are some studios, such as 2LG Studio, who have always been playful and have forged the way, always staying true to their mantra “making living lovely”.

This design philosophy celebrates fun, creativity and the unexpected, offering a refreshing alternative for those seeking to infuse their homes with joy and personality.

At its core, playfulism is an approach to design that encourages us to let go of rigid rules and embrace a sense of childlike wonder. It borrows the tenets of surrealism, updating them for a contemporary approach, and references classic lines and free-form shapes from art deco. It's about injecting spaces with personality, colour, and elements that play with scale or surprise the viewer, sparking joy. This doesn't mean turning your home into a circus, but rather finding ways to incorporate playful touches that reflect your unique style and interests.

Think beyond traditional materials like wood and metal. Playfulism embraces unexpected materials like cork, terrazzo, or even recycled plastics. A cork accent wall, a terrazzo countertop, or a colourful recycled plastic chair can add a playful and eco-conscious touch.

Engage the senses with tactile elements like bouclé fabrics, chunky knits, or textured wallpaper to create visual and sensory interest. Lighting can be a playful focal point. Look for sculptural pieces with interesting shapes or unexpected materials. Don't be afraid to showcase quirky art pieces, whimsical sculptures, or colourful prints. Art can be a powerful tool for expressing personality and adding a touch of playfulness.

When incorporating playfulism into your home, consider furniture with rounded edges and soft lines to create a welcoming and playful atmosphere. A curved sofa, a round dining table, or a scalloped headboard can instantly inject a sense of fun.

Playfulism is for everyone, regardless of your style. The key is to have fun with it, embrace your creativity, and don't be afraid to break a few design rules!

Are you ready to incorporate playful elements into your home? Start small, embrace the fun, you'll create a space that's not only stylish but also filled with joy and personality.
